the story

A young Ecuadorian boy in his late teens early twenties wants to strike out on his own, leaving his aged father and sweetheart behind in the coastal tropical fishing village of his birth. However, he is torn between, on the one hand, his duty to his old father and his love for his girl and, on the other, his driving ambition and his love for singing.
( The photography in color of the savage but beautiful Ecuadorian tropical coastal area is truly breathtaking as are the scenes of love and tenderness between the boy and his sweetheart and the understanding relationship between father and son.)

By a stroke of chance, a talent scout hears of the boy´s singing ability, arrives finally at the village, and after hearing him sing decides to give him a shot at an audition in the city of Guayaquil. Fucho, the boy´s name, with much patience and tenderness convinces both, his father and sweetheart, that he must at least try once to see if he really has talent and can sing and not to worry that he will surely return one way or another.

Upon his arrival at the great tropical banana and cacao exporting port of Guayaquil, the boy is, naturally a bit confused and bewildered by the hustle and bustle of modern life compared to the sedentary, monotonous existence of which he is accustomed.

(Here there was an opportunity to inject several humorous episodes with a play on words between the pate dialect of the montubiorural rustic illiterate peasant and the urban slang and good castellan Spanish of the city dweller.) After a few days of waiting his big day arrives and he auditions for several important people in show business and is signed on by a seemingly good agent manager. The agent initiates a program of conditioning Fucho for the modern world- new fashion clothes, a latest style haircut, etc, ect.

The day arrives for Fucho´s debut at a famous Guayaquil nightclub. An hour before he goes on stage, his girl shows up from the fishing village and they kiss and hug and declare their eternal love for each other. This contributes to his wonderful performance at the nightclub and his performance is a great success. As a result of his first big hit, his manager now plans a nationwide tour and talks about a Latin America tour, but here is where the trouble begins. The manager is deeply involved in a smuggling ring of Ecuadorian archeological artifacts. His client is a billionaire oil sheik from Saudi Arabia and a very nasty individual if he is crossed.

Fucho falls under suspicion by association with his manager and is arrested. He escapes while being driven to jail and after an interesting chase scene he makes contact with the talent scout who discovered him. The talent scout has some connections and they advise Fucho to explain everything to a judge who sympathizes with the young fellows predicament and orders a complete investigation, the result of which proves Fucho innocent and results in the arrest of his manager. Now free from his contractual obligations with the disgraced ex-manager, Fucho signs a new contract with an American promoter and show business man from New York, who recognizes the boy´s great talent and is determined to make a big international star out of him.

While in preparation for Fucho´s first international tour he suddenly collapses while singing at an orphanage benefit show in the city of Quito, capital of the Republic of Ecuador and is interned at the orphanage clinic where the local general practioner doctor orders a series of tests to determine the boy´s ailment. Pending the arrival of one test which had to be sent to the U.S.A. to be sure of the results, the doctor opinionates that Fucho may never sing again.

Fucho´s time in the clinic waiting for the results of the test to arrive allow him to observe the deplorable conditions which the poor orphans must endure. The lack of money to pay for proper sanitary conditions, soiled beddings, lack of potable water at times, lack of certain costly medicines and equipment to perform certain sophisticated tests, etc. Fucho promises the poor orphan boy lying dying in the bed next to him that he will do something about collecting funds for the construction of a new hospital if he himself recovers from his illness. When the one lacking laboratory test result finally arrives it shows negative and thusly Fucho will sing again after medical treatment and a short convalescence.

The day Fucho leaes the hospital he begins his crusade to raise funds for the new orphans hospital and after a few weeks of hard work and appeals and singing he accomplishes his goal. The day after the inauguration of the new hospital, Fucho leaves Ecuador on a Latin America Tour which has been planed and organized by his American Manager. The tour is an enormous success and fame and fortune are his.

Driving his new white Mercedes Benz, he returnes to a tremendous home coming at his native fishing village. The whole village turns out. His father embraces him. He hugs and kisses his girl and all is well that ends well.
